The Vieques conspiracy

by Guyan Wilks

When it comes to standing up for a just cause, helping the helpless and standing up for human rights, no one has done it more than the Rev Al Sharpton, and as long as this city and other cities continue to not give out justice and to violate the rights of citizens, the Reverend will continue to stand out against such things.

So it is not surprising that he went down to Vieques to stand up against the bombings. He like many people feel that the bombings are wrong. Before his fight for the comfort of the people of Vieques he had plans to run for the U.S presidency next election. But the Reverend was arrested for entering the bombing site and he and others were sent to prison to serve time.

What justifications did the U.S government have for holding the Reverend. When the whole city of Vieques can hold the government responsible for their in justice towards them? If states could hold the government responsible for all the injustice that has been done to them then the government would be in prison for years.

Look at the crimes committed by the government toward the Vieques because of the bombings cancer has grown in the country; there is no peace of mind for the citizens down there and one person has already been killed. This is a city that is filled with fear of what will happen if the bombing won’t stop.

One would think that since this is a democracy the government would here the cries of the citizens and comply. President Bush has said that the bombings will stop in the year 2003, but why should an entire city have to wait for peace of mind; Especially when our government is meant to be there for the people? Why can’t the Air Force find somewhere else to bomb, a place that is not populated.

So for standing up for the people of Vieques and doing it peacefully the Reverend Al Sharpton got arrested and put in prison. Who is right here: the Reverend or the government?

If in any way this was in an attempt to discourage Rev Al Sharptons’s pursuit of the presidency it hasn’t worked. the Rev is only using this to make himself stronger in ways that they can not imagine.
He still has his supporters standing with him. People are camped around the prisons just to show their support. So there is now putting down a good man's fight even with technicalities and plain wickedness.
