Comparison of "The Man He killed" and "Ambush"

War is rigorous. War has it procedures that must be followed. Sometimes in war you have to kill a person merely because they are on the other side.’’ Ambush`` by Tim O` Brian and ‘’The Man He Killed`` by Thomas Hardy portrays the narrators regret toward killing someone in war.
In ‘’Ambush`` the main character reflects on a time he killed a man. Characterization tells us more about a character. It reveals their true thoughts and feelings. The narrator of ‘’Ambush`` states ``I did not hate the young man’’. This shows the narrator’s true feeling about killing his enemy. The narrator had no internal motive for killing the guy. The emotional attitude of’’Ambush``elaborates on the narrator’s regret of killing someone in war. The emotional attitude of ``Ambush`` is regret. The quote ‘I wanted to warn him`` supports this emotional attitude. This shows he believes he made a mistake and that the murder he committed is unjustified. Believing his murder is unjustified shows the narrators regret towards killing a man in war.
In ‘’The Man He Killed`` the main character thinks it’s ironic that he killed a man in war. Irony is the emotional attitude of ‘’The Man He Killed``.’’The Man He Killed’’ contains situational irony. The quote ‘’Yes quaint and curious war is’’ supports this emotional attitude. This quote portrays the irony because he killed a man when, if they would have met under different circumstances they could have been friends.’ The Man He Killed has a recurring idea. The recurring idea of ‘’The Man He Killed`` is that in war people kill each other just because they are on the other side. The quote ‘’I shot him because he was my foe just so-‘’ supports this recurring idea. He didn’t know the man, he killed him because they were on opposite war sides therefore, foes. The main character thinks it ironic he killed a man in war because he had no internal motive to commit the murder. Also because he and the guy he killed could have been friends and who knows, maybe they would have gotten a drink together.
‘’Ambush`` by Tim O` Brian and ‘’The Man He Killed``have the same recurring idea and an emotional attitude that in involved in regret. The recurring idea of both is that in war people kill each other just because they are on the other side. Both ‘’Ambush`` and ‘’The Man He Killed’’ have similar emotional attitudes. Both emotional attitudes have to do with regret. The emotional tone for’ Ambush`` is regret. The main character feels regret for killing the man in war, On the other hand the emotional attitude for ‘’The Man He Killed`` is irony. In ‘’The Man He Killed`` the narrator feels regret for the irony in war. He feels regret for the fact that in war you kill a person when you could have been friends.’ Ambush’’ by Tim O’ Brian and ‘’The Man He Killed`` by Thomas Hardy have the same recurring idea and an emotional attitude that portrays regret.
‘’The Man He Killed`` by Thomas Hardy and ‘’Ambush`` by Tim O` Brian both portray regret towards murdering someone in war. In war people kill each other just because they are on opposite sides. In war there are rules, which must be followed. War is harsh.
