BACKWARDS
SDRAWKCAB

My film is a response to "White Noise", by Don DeLillo. The film is titled "Backwards" because I often used special effects such as slow and reverse motion to show that time can be altered. In "White Noise", time is essential: the characters are obsessed with growing old and dying.

In my film, I use television and the concepts of commercialism to show the confusion they bring in contemporary life. Ann watches TV as a Mc Donald's commercial comes on. I chose Mc Donald's because it is an obvious symbol of American consumerism.

I used intruding television clips and popular culture icons such as Scream to depict white noise. Surreal elements such as a spinning clock, water drops and snow defying gravity, and slow motion hint at the fact that she is dreaming.

McDonald's is a symbol of stability and replication of the same product. It has the same menu and design at every location throughout the world. With everything else going out of control in her life, Ann runs to McDonalds to find stability.
