Yesterday, July 27th, a select group from HarlemLIVE's Summer Youth Media Challenege student pool, was invited on a site visit of NY1! Accompanied by Ruschell Boone, NY1 Reporter from Queens, the students were able to witness the behind the scenes hustle and bustle of a real nesroom.
Ruschell Boone joined NY1 as the newschannel’s Queens Reporter in 2002, and has covered stories such as the search to find a bone marrow donor for a six-year-old girl needing a transplant, the acquittal of three policemen in the Sean Bell trial, and the closing of Shea Stadium. Ms. Boone is also NY1's Saturday morning feature reporter.
Thank you to Ms. Boome and Ms. Nikia Redhead, Public Relations Manager at NY1 News/NY1 Noticias, for this great opportunity!

We had our first SYMC judging session last night in a beautiful space at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, thanks to Mr. Steve Shepard, who has arranged for CUNY to host our weekly event. Thank you so much!
I believe we have really managed to raise the bar on the quality of students this year and this will become evident as students now begin to create new and innovative content starting this week. Their skill levels were already self-evident in their first introductory presentations, and I would like to thank Shelise Roberts, Matt Sneh and Nico Rosario for getting these students on track quickly and effectively. They are learning their skills and look excited and motivated!
Please sign up to sit on our panel of judges one of these Fridays if you haven't done so already! The students gain so much from our constructive criticism and guidance. Email Nico:

Wow! We have a great group of new students to kick off our Summer Youth Media Challenge this year! Yesterday we welcomed 21 new students from across the five boroughs of Manhattan to our program, and we expect a few more to trickle in. Shelise and Matt took everyone out for ice-breakers in the sweltering heat and today the kids begin with their multi-media classes.
We are excited to welcome Jason from AOL's StudioNow network as our newest menteer! He begins teaching video classes today!
And I can't sign off without thanking Nico Rosario (Program Manager) and Shirley Toussaint (Business and Marketing Manager) for their tireless efforts to make our recent transition a smooth one! Great job guys - we have an awesome team!
Its going to be a great summer...
