This dynamic Disc Jockey was born on July 21, 1954 in Brooklyn, New York and died November 8,1992 of AIDS complications and cardio endocarditis (inflammation of the heart), Levan was 38 years old. In a time when love and peace were the central themes of people's feelings and funk and disco were the soundtracks to their lives, an important figure emerged onto the scene of American popular culture, the Club DJ (Disc Jockey). The Club DJ was the purveyor of the night he was the one that provided the music for your evening and the grooves for you late nights and in 1976 there was only one king of that venue and that was Larry Levan. Levan began his career working in local clubs all over New York City. But his big break came in 1976 when he landed a job at the Legendary Paradise Garage on 84 King Street. Larry was the resident DJ of the Garage and to many of the patrons he was what made the club a big hit. So you can imagine their surprise when the club was forced to close down in 1987, but Larry was not shutting down. He sold the sound system he had built with a friend to the Ministry of Sound in London and together with the help of Tee Scott, Nicky Siano, David Mancuso took back the night. Levan helped to define an entire decade of music from house to dance and along the way he recorded over 80 songs that became the hits and defined a generation's musical reality. "Larry will always be close to me heart, his music spoke to the people in the club like only he could."-Freddie, Club Kid
