The man for who the Army was talking about when they came up with the catchphrase "Looking for a Few Good Men" was born in New York City on April 5, 1937. General Colin Powell has seen more death and destruction then most of us can possibly fathom and he has managed to maintain his sanity, his powerful intelligence, and his tremendous, influential, commanding power through it all. Powell who is the first highest-ranking African-American officer in U.S. history is not shy when it comes to being patriotic. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, he was a battalion commander in Korea, and he has served as commander of the 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and V Corps. Powell is also the recipient of numerous honors and accolades. He has received the following honors, The Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, A Purple Heart for Courage, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and an honorary knighthood (King Commander of Bath) from the Queen of England. Powell has also played an instrumental role in the in American Politics. In 1989 he made four-star general and was appointed chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Powell's new position helped him to assist the U.S. in a strategy during the Persian Gulf War. He had become such an asset to the America, that in 1995 he got widespread encouragement to run for the U.S. presidency, but he declined it for a much greater cause. Led by General Colin Powell, America's Promise (a non-profit organization) is dedicated to mobilizing youth and promoting positive change in American communities. Powell achievements and philanthropic sprit comes as no surprise to many because he says "There are no secrets to success. It is result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure." "Powell is a source of pride and inspiration for every Black man in America."
