The Childrens Museum opened in 1973 at 83rd street. It’s a Caribbean cultural museum. It offers many programs for young children that teach them hand on activities. The museum is a learning environment for both parents and kids.

The different type of exhibits that the Children Museum offer is the Discover Ancient Greece, Adventures with Dora and Diego, Amusement Park Science, Little West Side, and etc.  There’s a math exhibit where the kids learn shapes, another exhibit helps them learn alphabets. The PlayWorks exhibit is for kids younger than four. The Greece exhibit has many different activities that the kids enjoy to play. At the Greece exhibit there’s a Trojan horse where the kids can go and play in it acting like the soldiers who were kept in there, and there’s different games that kids enjoy. These exhibits ranges up to the type of age the kids are.

The programs that they offer in the museum are the Shelter program, The Family Access Membership program, afterschool programs, school programs, junior staff internship program and etc. The shelter program offer mothers parenting skills. It is a forty-week program that offers music, art, literacy, and more. It has been open for about 15-20 years. The summer classes cost ten dollars and many children are enrolled.

Activities at the museum entertain the kids and teach the kids certain topics. The parents interact with their children and learn from them. There’s an art wall where kids play with shaving cream and paint and rub it all over the wall. There’s a fire fighter truck where the kids play and act like fire fighters. There is also a karaoke room where the kids go and sing.

Ellen, 48, Assistant Director Manager, has been working at the Children Museum for five years. She enjoys the atmosphere and the children present. Ellen always wanted to teach children. She loves kids so much, that she cries to her husband talking about the kids she work with everyday. She enjoys what she does because she gets to help the community. She says that the people she work with is a “creative team.”

A grandparent, Richard, visits the Childrens Museum occasionally. He visited there about eight times with his grand children. His grand kids ranges up to one to eight. He bring his children to the museum because the kids get to do hands on activities. Childrens museum is enjoyable for the kids because they get to participate a lot and there is so much freedom for them. Richard also takes his grand kids to the Children Brooklyn Museum.  He would not take them anywhere else because the museums are specifically for the kids.
