Since the creation of automobiles pedestrian safety has been a problem in society. The lives of people are being lost daily due to unsafe streets. Not only are pedestrians dying due to walking they are dying due to not walking. Walking is a big part of people’s lives.
Children are one of the main pedestrians at risk when crossing the street. Sixteen percent of pedestrian deaths were people under 18 years old. Moreover, minority children are at a greater risk. The most pedestrian deaths and injuries are those under 20 years of age were Latino or African American.
Children aren’t the only pedestrians at risk, elderly people are as well. Twenty two percent of all pedestrians killed were over 65. These deaths have been said to occur due to walk signals, not being timed to the average pace of an elderly person.
The government creating more Pedestrian friendly streets can solve these senseless deaths. One way this can be done is with traffic calming techniques. Another way is building communities where everyday places are in walking distance, for instance, homes, schools, grocery stores, and recreational places. Extended sidewalks that narrow roads can divert or slow down cars.
An innocent bystander being killed by motor vehicles is becoming an epidemic. It can be prevented with solutions created by the community and local politicians. No one should be injured or killed when crossing a street. Especially when it’s due to negligence and irresponsibility.
