In the city, there are many support groups for different types of problems. Some groups deal with relationship abuse, drub abuse, and other problems that people deal with in the city. One such group is the Northern Manhattan Perinatal Partnership, led by Shavonne Hercules. The group was created to aid teens with self-identity and relationships issues to help them build healthy rel ationships. It was also created to decrease infant mortality and to improve the health of women. "The program is for women in Central Harlem, East Harlem, and Washington Heights,” said Debra Lisane, Deputy executive of the Department. Ajuwa Abdul-Halim, a consultant of Club Mom, said that the group also helps to “ Prevent HIV…and educates in safe parenting skills, and life skills.” The teens that attended sat in a half-circle of ten desks with a large wooden table with a steel frame in the front where Ms. Hercules was teaching. The teens are between the ages of 15-19, and had different opinions on the program. “It inspired me to do better,” said a 15 year-old boy. "It helps me with what to do with the baby, how to be a better mom and [gain] good advice…” said one 19 year-old girl. With more programs like this, there will be more opportunities for teens in need of advice for pregnancy and other relationship problems.
