Culture, Fun, and A Throw of the Dice

The very first Harlem- Board game, Harlem U.S. Allâ„¢, created by Harlemite Dr. Vicky Gholson, was demonstrated at the Cultural Center at Riverbank State Park on a recent Monday.

"It was nice. I liked the way they made the board. They put a lot of effort into it," said Malik Wilson, who was pulled into the game even though he came to cover the story for HarlemLive. "It should be sponsored by Milton Bradley, " Malik said.

Dr. Gholson created the game because the school system is not teaching enough about the Black History and Harlem.

Over one hundred people gathered to observe and play the game based on Harlem politics, culture, personalities, and history. The board game reflects much of the people who came to Harlem from down south to make a better living but who also made history.

When Dr. Gholson made the game, she knew something was missing and decided to make a life size game. The life size game includes three foot houses and knee high dice. The game also comes with fun facts, trivia questions, and activities. Malik Wilson and Peterson Meteullus were asked to recall several dances from past decades to win points for their team.

The evening was capped by the young players winning $100 trust funds, with gifts given to all in the audience. The festivities ended with a rousing explosion by the ARC (Addiction Rehabilitation Center) choir, directed by Curtis Lundey.

Vicky would love to sell the idea of the game to schools of New York and may

be even to Toys 'R Us. With the money she get back she would like to make more games. The game was made to make school more fun. Some items in the game include rent, landlords, first aid, police, firemen, just like real life.

Vicky would love to see seniors play the game because they think they know everything.

As Dr.Gholson tells it, her game is different than monopoly where you have to get as much money and property as you can. In Harlem U.S. All you have to acquire as much information as you can to win resources and points.
