I used to see people in the subway read the newspapers every morning. Not anymore. It seems people are scared to watch the news, scared to find out what is going to happen next.
George Bush's speech about Operation Infinite Justice and calling the terrorist attack "The Act of War" made me really mad.
The attack was horrible, we still experience complications in the city after September 11th, but what our president is doing is wrong. Retaliation is a completely brute way to go about this business.
First of all, we don't know for sure if it was Bin Laden behind it. Just because he is America's #1 enemy, doesn't mean we can blame this on him. And if he's somewhere under ground, even if we bomb the whole Afghanistan and turn it into a "big kittie litter box", we're never going to get HIM. All we are going to do is take lives of innocent civilians who had nothing to do with this attack, who already don't have anything.
Imagine what Afghans must be feeling right now, they're lives are hanging by a thin thread. Have you ever thought of the reasons why the attack happened? Why would someone hate America so much to kill so many people? Maybe we have been doing something wrong. We have been showing off our "macho-ness" to other countries all this time, no wonder people hate us.
And WHY did they attack the World Trade Center, the symbol for commerce, success, and superiority? The media and our government fails to inform the public of our foreign affairs. Did you know that for the past 6 years, US government has been bombing Iraq every week because of the Non-Fly Zone, which prohibits Iraq planes to fly over their own country? Did you know that we killed nearly 2 million of their children?
The whole Middle East hates us. Palestinians hate us because we support Israel in the Israeli Palestinian Conflict and supply them with weapons to drive Palestinians out.
Does it surprise us that they respond this way? no. I'm am very sad and sorry for the lives lost. People who died in the WTC had no idea anyway, it wasn't their fault. But what I've been trying to say is that we should not retaliate. It will only make matters worse. We have to overcome our animal instinct to strike back, and figure things out like civilized people.
If this turns into a war, it will definitely mar George Bush's reputation.
It will be an unnecessary war, unnecessary bloodshed. This wouldn't have happened if Bill Clinton was still president.
We should not forgive whoever did this, but bombing Afghanistan is not the way to deal with our loss.
