Convent Baptist Celebrates MLK Day

E-mail Print PDF
dsc04614Just in 2000, Martin Luther King day became a national holiday recognized by all 50 states. However, not for the Covenant Baptist Church who had its 40th annual Baptist Minsters Conference to celebrate the life and death of Martin Luther King Jr. The church, which is located on the corner of 145th and Covenant Avenue, was filled with lively attenders dressed in black attire. The dim lighting set the mood for the remembrance of Martin Luther King. The choir sang and praised to the music as their pastor played the grand piano. The historic black church has celebrated this day for 40 years and it's still the "star studded event of Harlem." Martin Luther King Jr. was a prominent leader of non-violence during the civil rights movement back in the 1960's and special guests such as Senator Schumer and Hillary Clinton attended the service in remembering the things that he has contributed to this country. Senator Schumer also talked about and the inauguration that will welcome Barack Obama into office in less than 24 hours.

dsc04616The service inlcuded the devotional period with Reverand Curtis Rumph, Peter Wilson and Irvin Melton. It also included the processional, the scripture readings of the old and new testament, singing of the national negro anthem, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and the liturgical dance. Youth were visible at this event; some were even in the choir. Ushers were also present and dressed in white attire and collecting tithes to close the ceremony.

"Let us continue to celebrate but at the same time realize that full freedom is a goal and not an accomplishment. We cannot say prematurely, we are free at last, but we work, watch and pray while we dream." This quote addresses the issue that we face now. 68 years marks the death of Martin Luther King Jr., but also marks the year that African Americans will make history.
