On Saturday, April 4, 1998, the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination, HarlemLive attended the Harlem Reads Harlem Writes Family Literacy Campaign at Frederick Douglas Academy. Their goal is to bring literacy awareness into the minds and hearts of Harlem's parents, and to congratulate children who have achieved a certain amount of literacy. Many people were there to support the cause of the Honorable Ruth Messinger, C. Virginia Fields, and Keith Wright. The Boys Choir of Harlem also lent their voices to the cause.
The program consisted of a few speeches by some of Harlem's political faces as well as a tribute to Martin Luther King by some of the students at Frederick Douglas Academy . Also, some of the parents who participated in the literacy campaign read stories to the audience, in both Spanish and English. Afterwards, there were presentations for renaissance men and women, who were bringing about change in their communities, and presentations to Literacy Associate Honorees, who had received a certain standard of literacy for their grade level. The program concluded with the beautiful voices of The Boys Choir of Harlem.
