On July 9, 2008 the Democratic Candidate for the US House of Representatives, Kevin Powell, attended the 10th Congressional District fundraiser held at Eugene's in New York City. The festivities began with local radio station, Hot97 DJs, Enuff and Angie Martinez introducing the Grammy-nominate artist Emily King. The performance was followed by a powerful and uplifting speech by the man of the hour, Mr. Kevin Powell.

Powell emphasized the idea of having a leader with the ability to relate to the community that he will be representing. The Democratic hopeful was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ proving that a leader like him can deliver on that proposed idea. When Dj Enuff was asked how he felt about seeing a Black leader guiding the borough he grew up in he simply replied, Amazing. He also added, ÒI'm a Brooklynite and I find it inspiring to see a politician like Powell giving back to the community politically and speaking from a background similar to mine.

One of Powell's main goals is to get the younger students in the city involved in the political process by speaking to them on their level. He does this through the distribution of CDs enclosed with a voter registration form; he also plans to tap into the wealth of young voters via MySpace and Facebook.

Powell's campaign also calls for specific focus on young minorities becoming educated on various topics and platforms in the realm of politics. Mr. Powell states, ÒImagine if we got excited about our politics? He says this in reference to the vigor and energy adolescents put forth in buying the latest sneaker or outfit. Powell seems to be a politician that not only says these things but really means them. He cares about what people my age think, feel, and believe.kevin powell smiling with mic

Talking to him one-on-one gave me the verve to want to become more politically aware and active. The thing that stuck out most in my mind after our conversation was when he told me and the videographer for the night, Matthew Sneh, Any adult that doesn't have the time of day for you is not worth talking to.Ó This meant a lot to me and other youth my age. We look to older people for guidance; if they are not willing to show us guidance then we can't be guided correctly. I believe Kevin Powell is one person who is willing to assist in guiding youth. Did I mention that supports Harlemlive.org?
