Many people today that the blacks in America are victims of mental enslavement. In a popular e-mail that has been circulating around the internet for at least 5 years now, titled "They are still our slaves", Dr. Arthur Lewin, an author and a member of the Black and Hispanic Studies Department of Baruch College, argues that the white society can maintain control over the black race due to our apparent selfishness, ignorance, and greed. Originally there was much confusion about the origin of this piece and its author. It was first conceived that an anonymous white man wrote it. It was also believed that a comedian, Dee Lee wrote this piece.

In the piece, it is discussed how the black race is overly materialistic and would rather spend their money on looking "fly" as opposed to investing in their future and spending their money more consciously. "They would rather buy some new sneaker than invest in starting a business" the e-mail reads.

The topic of Black mental enslavement has been an ongoing argument for decades. People ask why are Black people at the bottom of the economic scale but outspend all other ethnic groups in areas such as clothing, footwear, food and automobiles according to Target News.

In an earlier interview I did, Bishop E. Bernard Jordan stated that the Black race is, and was raised to be a race of consumers. Although many Blacks disagree with this allegation the statistics speak for themselves. According   to the Magazine Publishers of America, Black Magazines spent $55,369,598 on advertisements for apparel and accessories while only spending $12,152,643 on financial and real estate advertisements.

Contrary to the rise in the amount money spent on materialistic items, Black education numbers continue be stagnant. According to the Population Reference Bureau, about 75% of African Americans age 25 or older do not have a college diploma. Also, with the exception of Atlanta and Washington D.C. 80% of African Americans lack college degrees in the 15 largest U.S. metropolitan areas.

To gain insight from people of all races, I decided to post my question on Yahoo Answers. Contrary to the insights of people I've interviewed on the streets of Harlem, the member of The Yahoo community had varying opinions ranging from complete agreement to complete disagreement.

" I don't think they are mentally enslaved, but yes sometimes it does seem that some would rather have the bling instead of pay the bills. That said, there are white people the same way."

"I have said this to people before. I do believe to a large degree that we are still enslaved mentally. It's easy to change laws effecting black people, but it's practically impossible to change our people's mindsets."

" There are many reasons [for mental enslavement] the first is mis-education from home. Some blacks do see the point in working with other blacks to reach a goal. They don't trust each other and they are too showy. They would rather have a $500 purse and no money in it. The black race will never get out of the mess they are in until the Black Man fights back. In all of history the Black Man has never fought back, they will go out and kill each other... "
