hostelA youth hostel is an organization similar to a hotel, except that it typically accommodates travelers on a budget that don’t mind sharing a room with others. They offer budget accommodations where guests can rent a bed, meet like-minded people and share a bathroom. The “American youth hostel”(AYH) is located on New York City’s Upper West Side at 104th street and Amsterdam Ave. It is a Hostelling international Hostel and it is the biggest hostel in New York.

The idea of youth hostels began in 1912 in Altena Castle in Germany. Richard Schirrmann was the first person to create a permanent Youth Hostel. Schirrmann’s idea of creating youth hostels grew so fast that it resulted in “Hostelling International” (HI), a non-profit organization composed of more than 90 different Youth Hostel associations, representing over 4,500 Youth Hostels, in over 80 countries.

AYH has over 600 beds and accommodates about 186,000 thousand people per year, for prices ranging from $25-$45 per night. This hostel has an internal lounge called the “New York Room”, which reflects New York culture.  The rointerview at the hostelom hosts a Pool table, soda machines, sofas and chairs for a comfortable and social setting. They also have a “World Room” consisting of an extensive library, and is decorated wall to wall with world globes.  The hostel also boosts an impressive theater where the guests can gather to watch movies.

At the hostel there are many places where guests can buy prepared food, they also have the option to cook their own food in the impressive 32 stove kitchen within the hostel.   Internet and computer capabilities are available for $2.00 per  20 minutes.  The hostel also offer different tours such as the Pub crawl where tour guides take a group of foreigners from the hostel to different bars around New York. For an entire night the tour shows these travelers the ins and outs of our huge city all while having a lot of fun.  The hostel also offers other less exiting services including laundry machines, and place were the tourists can rent cell phones.

The AYH really cares about their guest by accommodating people from different cultures. If you choose to stay with a group of friends or family members they will be happy to please your needs. Also you can choose between a private room and a room that another person and you will have to share.

The hostel is a great place were tourist can go to meet new people and according to Patricia the hostel manager, “The hostel is a great place because it gives everybody a better understanding of different cultures.” Also many guests think that because the hostel is located in New York the prices are going to be higher but Russell Parker, 22, a visitor from Virginia said that the prices are good and the place is nice. Also Ryan MacGuare, 24,a visitor from Virginia, agrees that the staff is wonderful and very friendly.

At this time the hostel is in renovation and has been for about three years, but these renovations have been made to make the hostel more presentable for their guests. Although the hostel it is under construction it is still a great spot to go and stay in New York for an affordable price and a great location, near the magnificent Central Park and Broadway.

Special thanks to Patricia, the hostel manager, Odalis, Zack and the rest of the staff of AYH.
