After
26 years of papacy, Pope John Paul II has passed. For the
last few days the Vatican has been reporting the health
of the Pope. On March 27, Easter Sunday the pontiff was
unable to utter words at the service and as the week progressed
his health worsened. On Thursday, March 31st there were
reports that he would have a feeding tube inserted through
his nose to help him eat. On April 2nd 2005 at approximately
2:37 a.m. eastern time, the Vatican announced that the pope
had died
Millions of devoted Christians had gathered in St. Peters
Square with rosaries and candles since Friday. They all
prayed for a peaceful death.
Pope John Paul II had been hospitalized twice this last
month as a result of a breathing crisis. A urinary infection
caused septic shock a bacterial infection. Septic shock
is the result of over relaxed blood vessels. The blood flow
slows down and the heart has a harder time pumping.
When a high fever approached, John Paul’s health quickly
decreased.
Fifteen to twenty days after death another pope is assigned
to take the Pope’s place. Cardinals from around the
world will gather in Rome for the pope selection. Cardinal
Arinze, a Nigerian Cardinal, is already in Rome.
